The theme for this book could go many ways. There are many different themes that you could choose, but for me I think one that will always stand out is the quote from Atticus "Don't judge someone till you walk in there skin for a while." Now you may be wondering what that quote means. It may be confusing you. To be honest when I look at it I am not really sure what to make of it. So I am planning on explaining it to you.
Tom Robinson was a black hard working man. He did everything he was supposed to with the law. Sure everyone is not perfect but that's everyone. Now he went to go help Mayella like he did almost every day, this time was different tho. She attempted to kiss him and he didn't kiss her back. Now he went to court. Because he was black tho he got accused of rape. Even if he didn't touch her.
Now Mr. Raymond was played off as a drunk. He was a white man who married a black women and had kids with her. He didn't want people to know that he actually did what he did because he wanted to. Society wouldn't accept the things he did. So he did what he had to. He made people believe he was a drunk. The kids are the only people that truly understand why he did it. Countless times in the story Scout faces challenge of this quote. Like when Walter comes over to eat. She doesn't approve of what he is doing but then Calpurnia and Atticus tell her the quote. Atticus also explains this when Bob confronts him. Now this isn't the best reason for it. Bob was angry he lost what pride he had with the court case.
The theme is not to judge someone on the way they look, or how they act, then when you truly know how they are, then you can judge them.
